Italian has (7) choices for definite articles and the method for choosing which one to use is as follows:

For singular nouns
L' - use this article for all masculine and feminine singular nouns beginning with a vowell.
Lo -use this article for masculine singular nouns beginning with z or s + another consonant.
Il - use this article for all other masculine singular nouns.
La - use this article for all feminine singular nouns beginning with a consonant

For plural nouns
Gli - use this article for masculine plural nouns beginning with a vowel or z or s + another consonant.
I -use this article for all other masculine plural nouns.
Le - use this article for all feminine plural nouns.
