Cardinal Numbers in Italian

Italian cardinal numbers are invariable except for 1 or uno which can take the forms of; uno, una, un and un' in order to agree in gender with the noun to which if refers to, just as the indefinite article does.

To continue to count beyond diciannove (19) is simple. You merely take the number venti (20) and attach the Italian number for 1 through 9 to the end of venti. For the two numbers beginning with a vowell (uno and otto) you first drop the i off of venti (ventuno and ventotto). This pattern is repeated for all numbers through 99 using the appropriate numbers for 30, 40, etc.

For numbers over cento (100) it continues to be quite easy. To add values less than cento (100) simply attach the appropriate number to the end of cento, for example; centodiciannove. To create multiples of cento attach the appropriate number to the beginning of cento, for example; duecento. Mille (1.000) is handled in the same manner. There are a few things to keep in mind as we build larger numbers which are;

1) Do not drop the "o" in cento prior to a number starting with a vowel (centouno)
2) The plural for mille (1.000) is mila as in duemila (2.000)
3) In Italian when writing numbers instead of using comas to divide sets of 3 numbers you need to use periods as in 1.000.000 (one million)
4) Once you get to milione (1.000.000) you no longer attach numbers to the beginning of the number. Instead it becomes two words as in "due milione".
